European Court: No compensation for news extracts of sports events

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled that broadcasters do not have to pay compensation for the use of news extracts of sports events in general news programmes. The ECJ confirmed that the provision in the EU Audiovisual Directive, which grants the right to use news extracts, complies with the EU fundamental right to property and the right to conduct a business.  However, the ECJ also noted that the broadcaster using the news extracts must publicise the source of the broadcast in the news extract and should not use the news extract for entertainment programmes.
